Payment TerminalBack

Here is how to turn an old phone into a device for accepting payments.

01Use Cases

02What You Need & Steps

If QR-code payment alone is enough

  1. Install a merchant app such as PayPay for Business or LINE Pay
  2. Scan the customer's QR code with the camera, or display your own shop's QR code for them to scan
  3. This requires registering as a merchant (screening and linking a payout account). This step must be done by you directly

If you also want to accept credit cards

  1. Sign up with a payment service such as Square, Airペイ, stera, or Rakuten Pay
  2. Buy or rent the dedicated Bluetooth card reader (typically a few thousand yen)
  3. Pair the phone with the reader and process payments from the app

03Recommended Services

SquareSupports credit-card and QR-code payment; the phone itself becomes the terminal. Official site
STORES PaymentsSupports QR-code payment and can be paired with a card reader. Official site
PayPay for BusinessQR payment only, no extra hardware needed

04Notes

Every service requires signing a merchant agreement and passing screening. Please handle the sign-up yourself.

An older device may fall outside the app's supported OS version — check this before signing up.

If using it as a full register instead of cash, also plan how sales will be recorded.

What's Next:We are looking into linking with a contracted payment service and tying sales records to the stock data.
